(AP)- -Sen. Everett M.

Dirksen said today Cuba is a "military bastion" which constitutes a serious threat to the western world, particularly the nations of Latin America. Dirksen told a news conference there has not been enough emphasis placed on the military buildup in Cuba "for the purpose of carrying and infiltrating" communism into the countries of Latin America. The Senate Republican minority leader said there has been buildup in the supply of tanks, rocket launchers and small arms in Cuba which "could be penetrated into these countries that are poorly defended." He singled out Brazil, saying saying "a ruckus could develop there almost any time." Dirksen said nobody knows whether Russia has removed all Its missiles from Cuba, but added that it would be premature to suggest what the United States should do about the threat from the communist-dominated Island. He described Cuba as a "Russian suburb" and said the question of whether there may still be missiles on the island "is a disturbing matter as far as the country is concerned." Dirksen said failure of the United States to provide air cover during the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 is "water over the dam" but he and other Republicans will continue their investigation into into the matter. He said he proposed the investigation after Atty.

Gen. Robert Kennedy stated recently no air was promised to the vaders. "The Bay of of Pigs was a sleeping, dog for Kennedy about 20 statement, months" Dirksen said. "I don't like to see these things go unchallenged." Dirksen said the report by Republicans, containing information derived from numerous sources, will be presented to a Senate committee for study in about two weeks. Dirksen was in Springfield for a Lincoln Day observance.
