Is there a way to look up a company's EIN number? ›

What is an EIN Application rejection? If your entity name is not unique and the IRS finds one that is similar, you may be denied an EIN. Limited Liability Companies and corporations can't file articles of organization or incorporation until there is a unique entity name for that specific state.

One of the most popular reasons the IRS might deny your EIN application is because the name of your company is not distinguishable from one or more companies already in existence.

When prompted by the online EIN application, you need to provide the name of the entity, the trade name (if any), the county and state where the entity is located, the state where the articles of organization or formation are filed, and the entity start date.

You can look up another business's EIN using the SEC's Edgar system, as long as the business is a public company. To verify a charitable organization's EIN, you could check the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search tool. You may also be able to hire an online company to do the research on your behalf.

People who apply online through the IRS website won't need to check their application status because they'll receive their EIN instantly. If you applied by fax through Clerky, you'll have access to a timeline showing where you are in the process of obtaining your startup's EIN.

Unless the applicant is a government entity, the responsible party must be an individual (i.e., a natural person), not an entity. If you were incorporated outside of the United States or the U.S. territories, you cannot apply for an EIN online.

The IRS will tell you which number to use. If you do not have your EIN by the time your return is due, write “Applied For” and the date that you applied for it in the space shown for the number. There are special rules and procedures for classification elections made on Form 8832, Entity Classification Election.

While most limited liability companies (LLCs) will need an EIN, there are some exceptions. Multiple-member LLCs are required as a business entity to use an EIN to file taxes, but sole proprietors and single-member LLCs, or LLCs with only one member, are not and can use their Social Security numbers instead.

The processing timeframe for an EIN application received by mail is four weeks. Ensure that the Form SS-4 PDF contains all of the required information. If it is determined that the entity needs a new EIN, one will be assigned using the appropriate procedures for the entity type and mailed to the taxpayer.

You can get an EIN immediately by applying online. International applicants must call 267-941-1099 (Not a toll-free number). If you prefer, you can fax a completed Form SS-4 to the service center for your state, and they will respond with a return fax in about one week.

One of the most common reasons you might find that you can't get EIN online is that your application comes back with a Reference 101 error. This often occurs because you have a conflict with your name on the application. Entity names must be unique.

As mentioned earlier, if you apply online you will get an EIN quickly. But it typically takes about two weeks for it to be permanently registered in the IRS system. This registration is necessary before you can use the EIN for various purposes, such as filing an electronic return or making electronic payments.

Applying for an EIN

The online EIN application is available Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Once the application is completed, the information is validated during the online session, and an EIN is issued immediately.

It is comprised of nine digits and uniquely identifies companies for tax filing purposes. The EIN is information within the public domain, so you can legally search for the number for any company, but it is a federal crime to use the information illegally.

A Reverse EIN lookup is conducted when you already have access to a company's Employer Identification Number but need additional information about the company. If you require information that verifies things like the company name, address, or contact details, then a reverse EIN lookup is the correct process to follow.

The IRS needs to confirm your SSN and name along with other details you have provided. After this, the IRS will send a login ID and password via the US Postal Service.
